the voyer family vineyards are situated in verrières and ambleville, two of the very best villages in the grande champagne region, undoubtedly the first growth of cognac. these villages produce wines that create very elegant, powerful but smooth cognacs. the family have worked this vineyard for generations since the business was founded in 1795. over the last 200 years the principles of production have not changed much: the vines are trained to ensure the grapes receive the optimum amount of sunshine, and grass is grown between the vine stocks to reduce yields and increase the quality of the grapes.
the fact that they are winegrowers as well as distillers is significant: as far as they are concerned, the first priority is to run the family vineyard, and to take care of the entire chain of the production, from planting and growing the vineyard, through harvest, distillation, ageing in their cellars (with an unusually high proportion of new limousin oak barrels every year) to the blending and bottling. with 50 years experience, guy voyer employs a single copper pot still with great care using both the wine and the lees. this is a delicate method of distillation that gives softer, smoother cognacs and is, he feels, the only authentic way to reveal the deep richness of the eau-de-vie.
