the families of chanfreau and perrin have a long history in bordeaux , and today both château fonréaud and château caroline are owned and managed by members of the chanfreau family. château fonréaud, managed by jean and marie-hélène chanfreau, has 32 ha of vines in listrac on gravely, limestone terroir. the name fonréaud, previously "font-réaux", means royal fountain, and legend has it that during the 11 th century, an english king stopped off there, having found a source to quench his thirst. in 1962, fonréaud was purchased by léo chanfreau, and today, jean and marie-hélène chanfreau are continuing his work, with caroline chanfreau-philippon. caroline, appropriately, is also the winemaker for château caroline, which has 9 ha of vines situated on the plateau of bellevue, a clayey-limestone slope, overlooking the village of moulis.
