this domaine lies a few kilometres from the atlantic, and benefits from the cooling influence of the ocean, and from the sèvre and the maine rivers. since 1953 it has been in the ownership of the chéreau carré family. bernard cheréau's 10 ha vineyard is uniquely situated, facing south on a dome shaped hill overhanging the bank of the river sèvre, close to the confluence with the maine, and is managed ecologically, only using natural methods of pest and disease control. the 40 year old vines are harvested by hand and the traditional method of maturation on the lees is followed, with batonnage (stirring of the yeast lees) to help develop the aromas and the wine's complexity.

while finding this crisp, fresh muscadet sur lie, we were asked to try a chinon rosé too. it was fantastic! it is made by a friend of bernard chéreau, whose production is so small that he could not come and show his wines independently. we loved it: that is why it too is now in the list!
