murviel montpellier is a small medieval village northwest of the city of montpellier , on the st georges terroir, in the heart of the coteaux du languedoc appellation, an area known for its high quality wines. the very stony vineyard of domaine belles pierres is only 15 ha in size and is managed, with great passion, by damien and monica coste. the vines, ranging in age from 10 40 years old, are hand harvested in the mornings to keep them cool and transported in 30-40 kilo boxes to the winery to keep them fresh and avoid oxidation. the white wine, made from roussane and viognier, is aged is french oak (20% new) for 3 months, while the red is a blend of syrah, carignan and grenache in which only the syrah is aged in oak barrels for 18 months, allowing the spicy oak characteristics to develop without overpowering the intensely fruity nose.
