dennis groth and his wife judy purchased the 121 acre vineyard in oakville back in 1981. dennis confesses today that a major factor in buying these vineyards was the fantastic view that he and his wife got when they first drove to the top of the valley and looked back over the vines. the vineyards had been planted back in the 1970s by two masters of viticulture, ray duncan and justin meyer, who made the right decision in planting cabernet sauvignon, as it suited the land and micro climate perfectly. proof of this came when robert parker gave groth's 1985 reserve cabernet his first ever 100 point honour. groth was one of the first "cult" wineries in napa and is still improving year on year, which is clearly shown in the huge number of consumers buying from the cellar door. the production is family focused with dennis and judy being joined in the winery by their daughter suzanne and son son andrew, who are learning the skills that have made their parents' wines so famous. dennis and judy are dynamic winemakers, continually improving their vines and winery. over the last five years the crushing and fermentation areas of the winery have been brought up to cutting edge standard, new clones are being introduced in the vineyard, and a new barrel cellar is under construction.

"the bouquet is laden with juicy green apple and gardenia scents that literally made my mouth water. on the tongue it is crisp with just the right amount of acidity, and I swear on my life, tastes like liquid night blooming jasmine flowers. when I taste wines for notes, I always spit, but this wine I swallowed without a second thought." alder, vinography, 2007
